    Small Farms

Chris MacDonald always asks the tough questions in ethics and business. His latest article looks at efficiency and ethics in small vs large scale businesses.

Is Smaller More Ethical, or Less?
The general point is that smaller is generally less efficient, and inefficiency means (by definition) less output per unit of input. It means getting less for more. In a world focused on conservation, that’s crazy.
It is better to light a candle than to curse the darkness.

It's a very good point. I feel ok about buying produce from Florida, California, or even imported stuff when I think about it this way. I do like buying from small local farms when I can, though.

I wonder, is the article meant to refer mostly to livestock, crops, or both?
