I hadn't had doughnuts since going vegan. For over a year, I was doughnut free.

And I missed them sorely.

Finally, last week, my mom got a bright idea. She bought whole wheat pizza dough, and kneaded raisins and apple pieces into it. Then she broke it into little pieces, deep fried them, and rolled the fried dough in cinnamon and sugar.

Doughnuts!!!! Yay!!!!

Just thought I'd share the bright idea.

My mom found my great-aunt's doughnut-cutter thing and gave it to me...she's looking for the recipe. Once I've had a chance to play around with it a little, I'll post it.

I think you've "discovered" fry-bread :D A favorite of mine. Though I just eat it with margerine and syrup.

Here's a recipe, that I haven't tried, but its a non-yeast one so I thought it might be useful to some:

I usually just make a white yeast bread dough, let it rise, punch it down, pull it out in into small ovals, put slices into it (important, so it fry's evenly) and fry it up.

You can go sweet (syrup, cinnummumum, powdered sugar, etc.), or go savory (garlic salt, chives). It also works well as a "mock" Naan for East Indian food.

maybe :D Here in Canada we tend to call it Beavertails or Elephant's ears...they sell it at carnivals and fairs, but it always seems to have eggs and/or dairy in it, which sucks for me since, well, i'm vegan, and the beavertail was always one of my favourite donutlike treats. Best part of carnival time.

One of my favourite ways to eat them is spread with strawberry jam and sprinkled with powdered sugar :)

I've heard them called "Elephant's ears" all over the place up here.

Darn... this talk of donuts and yummy treats is making me hungry! I think I need to see if Mighty-O's is open... I'm too lazy to bake. :p ;)

i've made my own doughnuts from scratch, and they are the best things ever... yum!

i got a deep fryer from my mom for the holidays, so it'll be easier for me to make them this time around... mmmm....
