View Full Version : Jia's Vegan Story

So I became vegetarian when I was 10 or 12. I don't even remember, but it was a long time ago. When I was in high school, I started thinking about being vegan, but I came up with "excuses" not to do it. I'm too poor, mom would flip out, etc. In addition, I made sure I wouldn't learn about anything that would make me feel more inclined to change. I guess I was afraid not of the change itself, but of what people would think of me.

Anyway, I was getting more interested in being vegan early this year, as I had allowed myself to seek out the truth. About this time, I got really sick, so I gave up phlegm-making dairy. After that, it was really easy to make the emotional part of the switch. I'd never really liked eggs anyway, so after I wasn't eating dairy, if was like "oh, might as well go all out." I've not been happier.

On the down side, I was dating an omni at the time, and we've broken up over it. So there is sometimes more to the sacrifice than we initially think, if we think it's just giving up food. Not that I want to deter anyone, of course. I would've liked to have been prepared to lose as much as I did, though. I think in the long run, it's much better this way, but still it was a hard step.

Now I'm looking for a nice, vegan partner and some decent vegan cheese. :)

Welcome to VRF Jia.
Glad that you could join us. I am sorry to hear about your break-up over lifestyle choices...it's never easy. I realize that you lost something through this process, and you have gained a lot too, and who knows what (who) else is going to come into your life because of it. :)
I wish I had been strong enough at 11 or 12 to take such actions on what I believed in. Wow.
Also, I loved dairy and was so oblivious to all the problems it created in my life until I completely removed it.....No more mucoid puppy here!:D

May peace and joy be with you.

Welcome, Jia! :D

Wow. You and your partner broke up because he couldn't deal with your switch? If that's true, he wasn't good enough for you anyways :)

Glad you're joining us!

Oodalally, oodalally; golly, what a day!

That's from Disney's Robin Hood, right? ;)

Sorry to hear about the breakup when you went vegan. Dang. But having a vegan partner in your life is a treat, so at least you have that to look forward to! :D

(Oh, and look up Follow Your Heart, it's a vegan cheese. They might carry it at a health food store in your area... if not, then maybe you can convince them to! ;))

Welcome! :)

I can definitely relate to that. Several years ago, I think I actually used my blood type as an excuse for why I wasn't a vegetarian, let alone vegan.

As for the "cheese" thing, Tofutti makes great slices. Other than that, I haven't found many palatable alternatives.

Welcome!! :)

She stole what I was gonna say. :p

Check the food forum for discussion of viable cheese alternatives... (but I recommend the FYH and Tofutti-- AVOID VEGANRELLA LIKE THE PLAGUE!!! ;))

Less that he couldn't handle me changing, and more that I was evolving and he wasn't. Even though I was there going through it, and all the information was out on the table for him, he proved to be not the kind of person who can look into himself, compare who he is with who he wants to be, and act accordingly. I think that skill is an important one for personal growth. It's something I work really hard at. I never want to be less than I know I can, just because I don't want to admit I had been wrong. Being able to change one's actions to keep in line with one's beliefs is a totally valuable attribute. And he was lacking it. He was really a nice guy, and we worked well together, except he doesn't think about the world outside his doorstep... Another example is he refuses to get his male cat fixed, even though he goes in and out. Completely irresponsible, in my opinion, especially considering he'd have a female fixed. He's opposed to the idea, unless he would have to "deal with" the resulting kittens. Just stuff like that. Plus, I think it's important to share core values with someone when you think about having kids.
Thanks.

The original had two nasties, but I couldn't get 'em both and make it small enough. The quotation that goes with it is actually

"Every time you masturbate...
God kills a kitten
Please, think of the kittens"

I got it from a jokingly super-religious website and loved it.
Note: I believe strongly in masturbation and strongly against the idea of a vengeful god (or vengeful gods). :)

I'm oh-so very glad I have fellow Robin Hood watchers here! It's my favorite of all the Disney movies (it's my favorite story in general), and I've seen a LOT of them, as my mom has had a daycare since before I was born.

I like to say "A pox on you!" or even "A pox on the phony king of Enlgand!" but that doesn't go over as well. People look at me strangely and then talk to someone else...
