Today I joined the Teamster's Youth Boxing Club of South El Monte. I don't want to box; just use the weights and machines and maybe the jump ropes too if trainer Ben Lira will let me. Did you know eight-year-olds box? Neither did I, but apparently they do. I wouldn't want to get into a fight with any kids from South El Monte.

The boxing Club is kind of scary. The scariest are the middle aged men with gleeful smiles and/or menacing grins standing in opposite the corners of the ring as their adolescent progeny struggle to inflict maximum bodily harm on one another. The coolest are all the badass South El Monte girls that are doing the boxing training. The dorkiest is me, doing my wimpy weight routine and too shy to use a jumprope without asking. It's a pretty stimulating scene. I guess that's why I like it.

there is actually going to be one in the first part of April here in Canton.

here is the link to it:

http://www.gopherarun.com/races/2008-jack-hazen-open-pump-and-5k-ru.html

i am just doing the run, not the pump! i even know i won't do that great, but i want the experience and the chance to meet and watch other runners. and tressalou and a vegetarian friend of ours will be there, so i will have my little entourage, lol.

this will be the best learning experience for me, because my learning style is watching and doing.

That is really interesting, I've never heard of a run and pump! I wonder what % body weight you have to press per 30 second deduction? I could do maybe 20 - 25% for a few reps. (I'm kind of heavy, but not strong like ox :p)

chikara_no_tori
03-05-2008, 03:12 PM
lol...whatever percentage you could do, guaranteed, it would be better than mine... i need to start doing strength training, lol

Today's Hamster Activity:

45 min of upper body and some lower body (quads and calves for cycling)
30 min of cardio (not too heavy since I still have my cough from my cold of a few weeks ago).

YAY! It feels good to be back in the gym.

yesterday, i overdid it a little with my jogging and with the weather changing again (read my reply on the weather thread...), my left knee is being a baby. when i was 21, i saw an orthopedic surgeon concerning knee pain that was like arthritis and he said i had a crooked patella (i forgot the official diagnosis). i went on webmd.com and i think, based on what i found, it is called patellar tracking disorder, which is easily treatable for most people by physical therapy to strengthen the quadricep muscles (frontal thigh).

i will probably get around to getting it confirmed soon, but for right now, i am icing it, relaxing, and doing some light stretching. when i was younger, i took Glucosamine Chondrotin for the achiness and to build some cartilage. i didn't know that it is animal-derived (and probably would have not cared, as i was "vegan" for health reasons only). of course, that's changed now, and i found a really nice alternative where the Glucosamine is not animal-based and there is MSM instead of Chondrotin in it. i get more for my money to boot with this kind, so hopefully, within the next week, i can start again with the my regular regimen--and obey my body!

I've been taking yoga every other day. I can feel how much I've loosened up in just two months. Except my shoulders.

chikara - Be careful with that knee, you don't want to be sidelined by injury! Get yourself to a specialist soon if you can. Running is pretty hard on the joints, but I bet with some PT and maybe a knee brace you can keep running with no problems.

Work has been kicking my butt this week, no more work out for me yet this week :(

How are your knees Walrus???? :)

wellllll ... when i run on concrete, they don't do very well. most of the time they're fine, but other times, it hurts.

however, J5 and i were able to join a gym for real cheap (god, i love having this extra income!) and i've found that i have no problems running on a treadmill. i even rode the stationary bike and i was fine. weird. anyway, can't wait to take advantage of the yoga classes and massages!
