View Full Version : Stray Kitten

We just found out that one of the neighbourhood strays (a female, very small, we only see her occassionally) has a kitten. It was following her around today and we noticed that the kitten's eyes are inflamed, possibly infected. So we managed to get ahold of the kitten but not the mother. We're still trying to get her. We think he (the kitten, it's a boy) is around 5 or 6 weeks old. It's hard to tell since the mom is so small. He could be older because he was walking around following her today with no problem so I think it is past the weaning stage. I hope. They both look healthy though (besides the eyes).

Tomorrow morning we're going to take him to the vet (NOT the humane society...) and get him all fixed up. Luckily I have some money right now so I can pay for the vet bills. We're still hoping to get the mom though and get her fixed up and used to people. She shies away from people but otherwise, doesn't seem totally feral. While it tears me up to separate them, it would be worse if we did nothing at all. Who knows what could happen to his eyes if left untreated.

So we've got him in a carrying case in another room with food and water away from the other animals. Here's a photo AFTER we cleaned up his eyes... they are still pretty bad.

*sigh*

Aw, what a cute little guy! :) Do you plan to keep him, or?

I'm not sure... I think we're probably going to keep him after he gets his eyes fixed up at the vet and all the shots, etc. I totally wish we could get the mom though.

We did some investigating and found an old cardboard box a few doors down with a dirty towel in it. We think one of the local businesses was feeding the mom. But my BF just saw some raccoons messing with the box and we think that if she had any other kittens, they may have gotten them.

It's interesting though... we have bay windows that go from the floor to the ceiling (we're on the first floor) and the mom has in the past come up to our front window and "played" with one of my other cats Eddy through the glass. Today she came up and just sat outside the window, I looked out and there was the kitten with her! We had no idea she was a mom. In a way (and I know this sounds TOTALLY flakey) I think she was asking us to take care of her kitten. She didn't cry or yell when we picked it up. She watched us put it in the carrying case and take it inside. So hopefully she did want us to take care of him. I hope...

Aww, what a cutie!

Yeah, 'tis the season for kittens, and for kittens with rhino-, calici-, and herpes-viruses. Sigh. Hope I'm not jinxing anything by saying that most of the time even the goopiest eyes clear up just fine with a little basic care. (Keeping them clean, ointment, etc... though they can go blind if untreated, so he's a lucky boy!) Good luck with this little dude at the vet! I wonder if raccoons got the other babies, or if they were just much sicker with whatever virus(es) your guy has and didn't make it? Sad, but kitten mortality is extremely high. :( Luckily, a warm house, good food, and TLC can make ALL the difference!

(Man, that mama cat really knew what she was doing when she brought him to YOUR house! :) Smart move! I know what you mean about it sounding hokey, but I also know exactly what you mean about that unshakeable gut feeling that an animal has just somehow made a request of you... so I can't really say anything about the hokeyness! ;))

I think animals often have a really good idea of how to get help and/or who they can trust! ;)

A quick story to share -

Our old neighbors found a dog on the street near our house and were kind enough to round him up and hold him in their yard until we returned home. (They thought he was ours!) Anywho, we got home and informed them that no, he wasn't ours. So they decided that since they couldn't keep him, they'd call up everyone they know to see if anyone wanted him. (Grrr! ) But here's the great part - the entire time they were on the phone he barked. Loudly. So no one wanted him, and the neighbors turned him over to us.

After a month (nearly two) of found ads in papers, posters, and shelter notices etc., we made him 'ours' and he's been such a -quiet- sweetheart ever since! ;)

Good luck with earning the mom's trust!

Herbi, thanks for the encouraging words. :)

Jenzie, that's such a cool story! Mama cat is getting a little closer to us today. Which is cool... maybe we will earn her trust after all!

Here's the update on the kitten:

The vet thinks he is about 6 weeks old. He's full of worms so they dewormed him. His eyes are indeed infected and we were able to use some medication that we had for one of my other cats earlier this year (we confirmed this with our vet). Also, he has a slight upper respiratory infection so he's on antibiotics. He's apparently too young to test for feline leukemia or FIP right now. He goes in for his first set of vaccines in 7 days.

So... to keep the other guys safe, Wizzy (12 years) and Dillon (6 years) also have to get their vaccinations up to date. Eddy (11 months) is fine and Shadow (dog, 8 years) is... well, not the same species. But even with everything up to date, kitten will be in quarantine for a maximum of 14 days. Maybe I should make him a little face mask? Heh heh! (sorry, bad SARS joke...)

So Monday, Dillon gets vaccinated. Tuesday, Wizzy gets vaccinated and Saturday the kitten gets vaccinated. It seems like we are there all the time! Shadow was in last week for dental work, Wizzy was there a few months ago and both Eddy and Shadow were in before Christmas a bunch of times. Whew!

But otherwise, they think he's in pretty good shape.

He's totally sleepy now and I have woken him up a couple of times to eat. But he's sooooooooo tired from the trip to the vet. Awwwwwww!

He is so adorable! What a lucky guy! And the joke about a little face mask has me laughing (soooo not PC) :p

Does he have a name?

LOL! I was killing myself laughing thinking of how to design him (and the other cats) little face masks. It's sooooo timely since the media makes it out like everyone in Toronto has SARS.

He doesn't have a name yet but we've been joking about naming him after our vet! :)

LOL! Or maybe you can just call him "Doc". ;)

If you make those face masks I want photos of you trying to put them on your cats! Keep the peroxide and bandages handy. :D

Here's a photo of the little guy eating from chinese/japanese sauce bowls. :)

I think we're going to introduce him to Shadow (dog) in a few days so he doesn't get freaked out totally when he comes out of quarantine. Shadow just LOVES kittens... he perks right up and knows when to be gentle and when to put them in their place (when they are older and pestering him).

Oh! That is so amazing :) I'm so glad that little kitty found it's way to you! He's such a doll :) Please keep us updated on his progress!

BTW, I was dying when I looked at the pic of Eddy in his little Halloween tee! I think I'm going to have to print that picture out and at put it up at work :D

OMG, LOL!!! :silly: That is soooooo cute! :) And I was also cracking up at the idea of little kitty face masks. Hee hee hee!

Glad he seems to be doing well! Just out of professional curiosity (you can PM me if you want), what antibiotic did your vet recommend for kitten URI??? (We currently use Clavamox, but are considering rotating to a new one?)

And Jenzie, I *love* the story of the barking dog. :) We have also had a couple cases of perfectly well-behaved cats & dogs acting like little maniacs in new homes, causing them to be returned to us and readopted to places where they miraculously settle right in. Things that make you go, "Hmmmm....?" :p

I also have a winter blue snowflake sweater for Eddy too... he's outgrown both shirts, but now with kitten... it'll be dress-up time again!

The little guy is doing SOOOOOOO much better already. His eyes are almost cleared up and he's eating tons.

Glad to hear the little guy is doing better - he looks happy and healthy as can be!! :D

The pics are too adorable... goodness... my Great Dane even thinks so, as when the pic of the little one was on the screen, she came over and licked it. Hee! :)

And can I just say, the mommie and daddy are beautiful... but with the mom - those eyes! Wow. Continued well wishes in getting her to come closer yet. :)

Oh... and is that him asleep in his food dish?? I feel another 'aawwww' coming on!

More, more, more........ :)

Thank you for your latest photos....and I cannot let you leave it at that. I want to see the ongoing progress of this lovely little kitten-person who has been so blessed as to fall into your life.

May peace and joy be with you.

BTW, Buddy, the cat who I am cat-sitting is not impressed by my cooing and going "aaawwww" all over the photos. He figures that it is a waste of my attention that could be better spent scruffling and skritching him.

ditto. My eyeballs just exploded. In my office. I am now trying to explain (blindly) why this happened to all my workmates. This involved me showing them the pictures (and thereby ruining my reputation as a diligent and productive member of the workforce by admitting that I spend a little - cough- time looking at non work related websites) and now there are about 7 sets of eyeballs messing up our carpets. The cleaners were brought in, they demanded an explanation... think of the mess dammit!!

I am so in love with your kitten. My dogs will smell the betrayal as soon as I get into my house. *sigh*

Yeah, we just love him to bits. He's such a funny little guy and all the critters are pretty cool with him. :)

The grey cat (Eddy) is still young himself. Only 11 months old and he's quite taken with little Bruce Lee. :)

"Bruce Lee", eh? Argh! I see these little guys every day at work, and yet I still can't help but freak out over how cute he is! :) I like how your dog snuffles him. Hee hee hee. Adorable! And very glad he has recovered so nicely. Yay for you!

Too cute. Simply toooooo cute!! I kept making baby noises at the screen and demanding that my boyfriend to "Look!" "Oh, look again!" "Oh, you've got to see this one!" ;)

One would think I've never seen a kitten before! :p
